Celebrating Back to School

Block Party in Warrenville a success despite the rain.

Summer block parties are filled with lots of fun—good food, games to play, and new neighbors to meet! The Back to School Block Party sponsored by Warrenville Youth and Family Services (WYFS) and Warrenville Persons in Ministry (WPIM) for the residents of Country Ridge Apartments and students of Johnson Elementary was no different.

More Than a Party
Designed to highlight the importance of school success, the Back to School Block Party combines fun while meeting some of the practical needs parents have when sending their kids off to school in the fall. What they didn’t plan on were the showers that rained out the outdoor festivities.

But the rain couldn’t damper their spirits—or their plans. The Block Party quickly became a “Basement Party”; the attendees, food, face painters, and games were quickly moved to the basement of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, where the event was as fun and lively as ever.

Event Success
Chik-fil-A sponsored the food for the over 300 people in attendance. The local police and fire departments provided safety tips for residents. And for the second year, Liberty Mutual sponsored a back pack drive, which allowed families to purchase a backpack filled with school supplies for an affordable price.

“We packed about 165 backpacks and distributed all of them!” says Amy O’Brien, Minister of Christian Education for Immanuel Presbyterian Church, “In addition we donated some extra supplies to Johnson Elementary school.”

Despite the weather, the block party was a great success for the residents of Country Ridge apartments and sponsors WYFS and WPIM. “It’s a great party end to the summer, says WYFS director Angela Mains. “Thanks to all who helped in gearing the kids up for the new school year!”
