The big news at Discoveries Resale Shop in Warrenville is the launch of a furniture annex—it’s located about three or four storefronts down from the main Discoveries Resale Shop on the corner of Batavia Road and Route 59. Bonnie Slusarski, volunteer and member of the Discoveries Action Board, says the annex is full of furniture donations, and the customer base has expanded. “It started with people walking in from the neighborhood, but now we have people driving from as far away as Rockford,” she says. “This is their destination store.”
The Furniture Annex features everything from couches to chairs to beds to hutches to coffee and dining room tables. It also includes a hanging display of decorative lamps and room set apart completely for clearance items. The furniture annex, along with Discoveries Resale Shop, has had a banner year despite the economic downturn. Since all proceeds go directly to Warrenville Youth & Family Services, this has been an amazing blessing.
Ted Coons, member of the Discoveries Action Board, says, “We’re really excited about more dollars coming into WYFS’s programs. When we talk to our customers about the difference WYFS is making the community, they’re thrilled their money is going to such a great cause.”
One man, Mike Bixler, felt led to volunteer based on this mission. “I’ve been looking for a way to serve my community, and I’ve always appreciated WYFS.” he says. “Discoveries is a perfect volunteer opportunity because I can bring my kids so we can serve as a family, and I know we’re helping an organization that’s really making a difference.”
Volunteers like Mike are needed to drive furniture trucks, arrange merchandise, sort donations, and attend to the general upkeep of the store. Discoveries is always looking for donations, as well, and also needs fans of Discoveries to spread the word!
Slusarski adds, “You can make a difference. Donate. Shop. Volunteer. There’s lots of ways to help out!”
